Opelousas - Funeral services will be held for Arthur ("A.J.") ("Jay") Joseph Fisher, Sr. on Friday, March 31, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the Skip Montet Memorial Chapel at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas. Father Matthew Higginbotham will conduct the services. Rite of Committal and Burial will follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Washington, LA.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. in the Skip Montet Memorial Chapel at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home in Opelousas.
Mr. Fisher, age 80, a resident of Lafayette, La., passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023, at his residence.
Arthur was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. He was a long-time member of the American Legion Post 209 in Washington, La. Arthur was honored to receive the Veteran's Honor Medal which was given to him by Governor Bobby Jindal.
Arthur retired from ACME Trucking after driving for many years. He was avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his later years, he participated and excelled in the Senior Olympics. He was very enthusiastic about reading, was excellent at storytelling and was a passionate writer. He wrote poems and short stories about his adventures and travels. Arthur was a kind and gentle soul and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his son, Arthur Joseph, Jr. "Joey" of Gonzales; his daughter, Marye Antoinette Chow "Toni" and husband, Jimmy of Tyrone, GA.; his brother, Bobby Fisher and wife, Harriet, of Opelousas; and his sister, Marie Pitre and husband, Glenn, of Washington. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Ashley Fisher, Tiffany Fisher Van Horn and husband, Thomas, Christopher Frank Chow and Mitchell Garner Chow and wife, Shannon; three great-grandchildren, Thoms Van Horn, Isolde Van Horn, and Alexander Van Horn and his special friend, Nelda of Opelousas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.W. Fisher, Sr. and Theresa Jones Fisher; his wife and the mother of his children, Frankena Briley Fisher and his brother, Julian Whitmore, Jr. "Jack".
Pallbearers will be Joey Fisher, Richard Wild, Jason Vandike, Bobby Fisher, Jimmy Chow and Kacy Fisher.
The family would like to give a special thanks to his caregivers, Lori, Kirk, Jackie Landry, Chris Starling for helping with his needs.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations in his memory made to the American Legion Post 209 in Washington or the Wounded Warrior Project.
