Bernard Marks passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Opelousas, Louisiana, at the age of 89. Born on March 15, 1937, in Lebeau, Louisiana, Bernard lived a full and meaningful life marked by hard work, community involvement, and a profound love for his family and friends.
Bernard’s career as a carpenter reflected his commitment to craftsmanship and the tangible satisfaction of creating with his own hands. Throughout his professional journey, he was a dedicated member of the Carpenter's Local 1098 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, known not only for his skill but also for his integrity and the respect he earned within the trade. Outside of his vocation, Bernard’s passions extended deeply into hobbies such as gardening, fishing, and hunting, pursuits that connected him to the natural world and offered him quiet moments of reflection.
He was a past member of the Sertoma Club, demonstrating his dedication to service and community engagement.
One of the most cherished memories Bernard leaves behind is his honor to be a loving and dedicated husband and a caring father to his children. He enjoyed the time spent with his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He took great joy in cooking for loved ones and friends, particularly delighting in preparing cochon de laits—a tradition that brought warmth and happiness to gatherings. These moments encapsulated his generous spirit and the importance he placed on nurturing both body and soul.
Bernard Marks is remembered with great respect and admiration by those who had the privilege to get to know him. His legacy is one of dedication—to his craft, to his faith, and most profoundly, to the people he cherished. He leaves behind a community enriched by his presence and a family close-knit through the love he so freely gave.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Jane Quebedeaux Marks of Washington; one son, Kenneth Marks (Collet); three daughters, Bonnie Soileau (Bruce); Gwen Ziegler (Jim); and Karen DeMourelle (Steve); his grandchildren: Layla Soileau, Abrie Jane Sellers (Nicholas), Lori Ann Granger (Doug), Annie Rae Viator (Hank), Adam Marks, David Ziegler (Abby), Gabriella DeMourelle, and Annalise DeMourelle; and his great-grandchildren: Hailey Viator, Heidi Viator, Andrew Marks, Corbin Thibodeaux, Logan Granger, Julian Sellers, Wren Sellers, and Ainsley Ziegler. He is also survived by one brother, J.W. Marks (Norma); one sister, Brenda Soileau (Jerry); his godchildren, Mark Arnaud, Brenda Soileau, and Donald Meche; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Marks and Joyce Dupre Marks; son, Dwayne Marks; his grandparents, Necaisse Marks and Anna Morain Marks; and Gustave Dupre, Sr. and Lola Fontenot Dupre; and his godparents, L.T. Dupre and Eula Whittington.
His life stands as a testament to the virtues of hard work, devotion, and heartfelt generosity. Bernard will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
