Bernard John Thornton, fondly known as "John" or "Dude," passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026, in Lafayette, Louisiana, at the age of 88. Born on October 8, 1937, John lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and an enduring passion for horses.
John’s journey began in Milnor North Dakota where he embraced a strong work ethic early in life. A good sense of values surrounded John which were instilled in him by his parents, Charlie and Margaret Thornton. Even as a young man growing up in Milnor, he demonstrated the resilience he would have the rest of his life. Being industrious and while still in high school, he worked at the local grocery store. This experience set the stage for his later jobs with the National T chain of grocery stores and eventually led to his ownership of a meat locker plant in Milnor.
It was during this chapter of life that John’s father-in-law Meredith Herman introduced him to purchasing his first horse—a pivotal moment that would reshape his future. This encounter sparked a lifelong passion that would come to define him. Determined to immerse himself fully in this new pursuit, John attended farrier school, mastering both the trade and the medical aspects of corrective shoeing. After selling the locker plant, he relocated with his family to a farm near Vining, Minnesota—a property also discovered through his father-in-law—where he embraced his calling to raise Quarter Horses.
On their Vining farm, John and his family lived a life centered around their shared love for horses. He became deeply knowledgeable about pedigrees and bloodlines, finding joy in discussing them with others who shared his passion. His skill as a farrier earned him widespread recognition, as he traveled extensively to provide for his family while maintaining the close-knit bond necessary to run a horse farm.
For many years, raising horses defined John’s life. His dedication to improving everything he touched extended beyond his work—he also instilled a strong work ethic in his children and served as an example of perseverance. Known affectionately as "Dude" due to his sharp sense of style in his youth, John carried this nickname with pride throughout his life.
John's love for reading was another constant throughout his journey—a testament to his lifelong curiosity and quest for knowledge. This last year, he reflected often on the love of his life and partner of 69 years, Nola Thornton. Together they built a legacy grounded in love, hard work, and devotion to family.
John is survived by his son Jeffrey Thornton (and wife Jana) - grandson Jorma Thornton; daughter Rinea Blanchard and grandchildren Tara Blanchard, Zack Blanchard, and Evan Thornton; as well as seven great-grandchildren who continue to carry forward his legacy. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nola Thornton; sons Miles Thornton and Steve Thornton; and parents Charlie and Margaret Thornton, brother Ken Thornton and sister Betty Pearson.
Bernard John Thornton will be remembered for his commitment to family, endless curiosity and a deep connection to the land he called home. May those who knew him find comfort in cherished memories of a life well-lived.
