Betty grew up in the heart of Louisiana and graduated from high school in Melville before going on to attend and graduate from University of Lafayette with a teaching degree. Education was more than a career for Betty; it was a calling. Over the past 40 years, she taught in Leonville, Krotz Springs, Plaisance, and Melville before retiring from Palmetto Elementary School. She was known as “Maw Betty” to many of her students and family members. Along the way, she also coached junior high basketball at Krotz Springs, bringing the same energy and determination to the court that she brought to the classroom.
In 1954, Betty married the love of her life, Harry Lee Artigue, in a ceremony performed by a justice of the peace in Woodville, Mississippi. Together they built a beautiful life and a big, loving family. Betty and Harry shared a passion for adventure, traveling the world with their children and making memories everywhere they went. After Harry's passing, Betty kept that adventurous spirit alive, spending every summer exploring new places with her dearest friends.
Betty was the kind of person who made everyone feel welcome. Friendly, easygoing, and genuinely caring, she had a warmth about her that drew people in. She was hardworking and motivated, yet always ready for the next adventure or a good conversation. When she wasn't traveling, you could find her with a book in hand or enjoying a good cup of coffee - one of her simple, daily pleasures. One of her greatest joys was reading to children and working on crafts at the Krotz Springs library during every holiday event, sharing her love of stories with the next generation.
Her dedication to her community ran deep. Betty served as a board member for St. Landry Parish District 6 and volunteered with the Krotz Springs Fire Department for EMT. Her faith was the foundation of everything she did. She was a devoted CCD teacher at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Krotz Springs and served as a lector, sharing God's word with her parish family. Her deep and abiding relationship with the Lord guided her through every chapter of life, and she lived her faith not just on Sundays but in every act of kindness, every lesson taught, and every life she touched.
Betty is survived by her sons, Keith Dwayne Artigue “Poncho” (Sharon), Karl Ray Artigue (Julie), and Carl Jo Casse; her daughter Kristina Lynn Boudreaux; grandchildren Crystal Heath (Chris), Patrick Artigue (Nikki), Jeff Dixon, Tiffany King (Jerome), Daniel Artigue (Jade), Frankie Viator (Brandon) Kaleb Artigue (Emma), Kolby Artigue (Shannon), Kelsie Thomas (Zach), Chad Boudreaux (June), Jessica Hnatiuk (Chris), Brad Boudreaux (Shalane), ; great-grandchildren Sage, Sydni, Jazlynn, Cori, Maddox, Gabe, Rylee, Keira, Ryan, Kaylee, Hayden, Blake, Braelynn, Vance, Peyton, Kolton , Lennox, Margot, and one more to soon arrive ; great-great grandchildren Parker, Lewis, and Dallas.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry Lee Artigue; her father, Frank Andrew Brown, her mother Edith Muse Brown; and dear family members Antoinette Barras Artigue, Abra Artigue, Kimberlynn Artigue, Andrielle Artigue, and Brandon Viator Jr.
Betty lived a life rich with purpose, love, and faith. She shaped young minds, strengthened her community, and held her family together with grace and grit. She is home now with her Lord and Savior, reunited with those she loved and missed so dearly. Her legacy lives on in every student she taught, every child she read to, and every heart she touched along the way.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate support, and to her devoted sitter, Pauline, for the love, kindness, and care she provided.
