Carroll Lester Gautreaux, a dedicated carpenter and talented artist, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the age of 71 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born on March 13, 1952, in Opelousas, Louisiana. Carroll was a beloved member of his community who touched the lives of many through his craft and generosity.
Carroll's career spanned over five decades as he owned and operated C.G. Woodwork, showcasing his exceptional carpentry skills. But he didn't stop at woodworking. Carroll expanded his artistic endeavors by starting French Metal where he used metal to create remarkable pieces of art that captured the essence of Cajun history and lifestyle. His 3-D sculptures depicted scenes ranging from swampy landscapes to lively crawfish boils and parades, providing a glimpse into the vibrant Louisiana way of life.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Carroll was deeply passionate about the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, cherishing every moment. Additionally, he had a musical talent that brought joy to many.
Carroll's proudest accomplishments included being a member of various organizations that reflected his interests and values. He was a former member of the Louisiana Crafts Guild, the Elks Lodge, the bass club "Yambassadors" and the Sportsman Association.
Carroll's memory will forever be treasured by his wife of 51 years, Janice Savoy Gautreaux; his sons, Joseph Carroll Gautreaux and wife, Mary Denise Hidalgo, and Charles Ryan Gautreaux and wife April Heather Marks. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kaleb Joseph Gautreaux, Taylor Elise Gautreaux, Benjamin Jude Gautreaux, and Rosalie Paige Gautreaux; his brother, Kenneth Wayne Gautreaux and wife, Sharon; his sister-in-law, Alice Gautreaux; his brother-in-law, Paul Darbonne, Sr.; and a host of nieces and nephews. They will forever carry his legacy in their hearts.
Carroll leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth cherished by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Mable T. Gautreaux; paternal grandparents, Lastie and Alida Gautreaux; maternal grandparents, Alfred and Olivia Theriot; his brother, William “Billy” Alfred Gautreaux; and sister Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Gautreaux Darbonne.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2024, in the Skip Montet Chapel at LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A rosary service will be prayed that evening by Deacon Dwayne Joubert at 6:00 PM. On Friday, January 26, 2024, the funeral home will re-open at 8:00 a.m. until service time.
Funeral services for Carroll will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Skip Montet Memorial Chapel at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home in Opelousas. Monsignor Russell Harrington will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Carroll Gautreaux, Charles Ryan Gautreaux, Kenneth Wayne Gautreaux, Paul Darbonne, Jr., Kaleb Joseph Gautreaux and Benjamin Jude Gautreaux.
