Opelousas

Today we announce the passing of Charles “Scooter” Hiller V, at 74, on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.  He passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Scooter was a native and life-long resident of Opelousas. He was happily married to his wife of 53 years, and together they raised three children. He and Anne both loved spending time cooking, drinking, and fishing. Most people would remember his famous chicken salad sandwiches that originated at Scooter’s Grocery in 1985. You could find Scooter down any aisle of the local grocery store promoting mayonnaise and coffee sales since he began working for Reily Foods in 1990. He was a self-taught gourmet chef, who spent endless hours in the kitchen preparing mouth-watering dishes. Scooter was a doting grandfather and so proud of his two granddaughters, Rhyan and Reece.

He will forever be remembered and missed by wife, Mary Anne Miller Hiller of Opelousas; his son, Charles “Charlie” Hiller VI of Opelousas; his daughter, Ashley Hiller Burleigh and husband, Chad of Opelousas; his sister, Barbara Hiller Sebastian and husband, Marion of Baton Rouge; and his granddaughters, Rhyan and Reece Burleigh.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Hiller IV and Marie Emma Ardoin Hiller; and his daughter, Krishna Hiller Crawford.

A private service for the family will be held at a later date.

The family would like to extend highest gratitude to Trish Bonaventure, Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care, and Lakerria “Key” Simon for the exceptional care they provided.

Should you find it in your heart wanting to help, the family asks that you make a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or to The National Ataxia Foundation.

Family and friends are invited to sign and view the online guestbook at www.lafondardoin.com.
