Dr. Rodney Hatfield

December 6, 1976 — July 14, 2021

Dr. Rodney “Jason” Hatfield, resident of Washington, LA passed away unexpectantly on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, while hiking up the Bright Angel Trail in The Grand Canyon National Park.

Jason was born in Shreveport on December 6, 1976, to Rodney and Susan Hatfield. He attended Hall Summit High School and graduated in 1994. He attended college at Northeast Louisiana University and graduated in 1998. He perpetuated his learning career by diving into a second major, History, a topic he always loved. A year later he pursued a master’s degree under the graduate professorship of Dr. John Carr in the subject of Biology with a focus on herpentology. It was here that he met and cultivated some of the most beautiful friendships he had in his lifetime. In March of 2003, he began dating his future wife, Allison Marie Stacey, a biology major with an interest in pre-medicine. He was accepted to medical school at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport in 2003. In 2007 he began his internship in Family Medicine at LSU-Shreveport. On May 30, 2009, he proposed to Allison. It was the day Allison graduated from medical school. He told Allison that he always wanted to marry a doctor. That fall he completed his Family Medicine residency and started his first job as a physician in Mansfield, LA.

Before Jason and Allison were married, he devoted a year to Christianity where, under the guidance of Deacon Bill Roche, Father Karl Daigle, and his fiancé/sponsor Allison he went through RCIA and converted to Catholicism receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation on Holy Saturday, April 3, 2010. On July 17, 2010, he and Allison were married in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shreveport, LA.

Jason and Allison had their 1st child, and only daughter, Olivia Grace on November 8, 2011. Olivia was nicknamed “Goose” by her Daddy and she had him wrapped around her finger from the first time he laid eyes on her.

In August 2012, the Hatfield family relocated to Opelousas, LA after Jason was recruited by Amanda Fontenot and Opelousas General Hospital to a wonderful Family Medicine Practice with Drs. Michael Burnell and Richard Harmon. In 2013, pregnant with their second child, they relocated to their beautiful “forever” home in Washington, LA. They filled that large home with lots of love, laughter, and children. They had their 1st son, Benjamin Michael on 8/27/2013. On 3/22/2016 and 8/7/2018 respectively they welcomed 2 more beautiful Hatfield boys: Luke Thomas and Samuel Jason. His children were absolutely the most important part of his life. He made sure to tell Allison this and show his children this with his daddy bear hugs and by always attending the children’s functions. Jason personalized each of their bedtime routines every night.

Jason was a man of MANY titles: a son, brother, uncle, devoted husband, in-law, father, friend, and physician. He had a passion for all things sports related and a love for his home state. His favorite sport was basketball which he played, watched, and coached. He had a love for music of all kinds and did almost everything while listening to a playlist. He shared this love of music with his children by having numerous family dance parties and watching American Idol as a family. He rocked every child to sleep with “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” by Sufjan Stevens and often played this song to soothe and calm the wildness of the Hatfield Howlers. He enjoyed travelling, sampling craft beer at local breweries, and considered himself a whiskey connoisseur. He and his close knit “guy friend” group shared their favorites and rated different IPAs and other brews on Untapped. He thought of himself as a Fantasy Football specialist and holds the 2020 record for the WSOFS league. Allison learned early on that a “meal” was not considered to be a “meal” unless meat was included – something that always made her giggle…and sigh when preparing meals. Later in his years, he found a love for preparing his own meals, especially the meat, and was an excellent grill master.

He did EVERYTHING for his family and friends and will forever be missed. He was very intellectual, LOUD, fun to talk with, and compassionate. He is leaving a gaping hole in the medical community, as so many of his patients have reached out to his family describing the love and respect that they shared for him as their physician.

He is survived by his parents Rodney and Susan, his wife Allison, his daughter Olivia and 3 sons Benjamin, Luke, and Samuel, his sister Carolyn, husband Darren, brother Ryan Christopher, his in-laws Dr. Michael and Deborah Stacey, brother in-law, Kevin Stacey, wife Danielle, sister in-law Melissa Bordelon, husband Michael, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his grandparents: James and LaFon Hatfield and Clarence and Doris Guard.

A visitation is scheduled from 3-8pm with the offering of a Holy Rosary at 6:30pm on Tuesday, July 20th at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home. Visitation will continue the following morning at 8am at the funeral home before the procession to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington for the funeral at 11 am on Wednesday, July 21st.
