Henry Antony will officiate the services.  Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the St. John Catholic Church Cemetery in Melville.

Gene passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Opelousas General Health System in Opelousas, Louisiana, at the age of 86.  He was born on July 26, 1937, in Melville, Louisiana. Gene was a loving and caring individual who deeply cherished his family and made lasting memories with them throughout his life.

After graduating from high school, Gene embarked on a career as an iron worker. His dedication and hard work were evident in every project he undertook. Gene's skills contributed to the successful completion of numerous construction projects over the years. As a retired iron worker from the construction industry, his commitment to his craft was widely recognized by his peers in the industry.  He was a proud member of the Ironworker’s Local Union 623 in Baton Rouge.

Gene had a sincere devotion to his family. He lovingly cared for his parents for many years, exemplifying kindness and compassion in all aspects of his life. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He found immense joy in spending time with them and witnessing their growth. Whether it was attending their school events or celebrating milestones together, he enthusiastically supported and encouraged each one of them. Gene's selflessness extended beyond his immediate family; he often welcomed friends known as his “Buddies” to sit with him on his swing outside under the magnolia tree. Together, they would reminisce about old times and memories.

Gene was a proud veteran of the United States Army who served his country honorably for two years.  In addition to his commitment to family and country, Gene had a few hobbies that brought him joy throughout the years. An avid deer hunter, he relished the peacefulness of nature while immersing himself in this adventurous pastime. He was also a longtime member of the Michaud Hunting Club in Melville—an association that allowed him to form bonds with fellow hunters who shared similar passions.  His love for sports, particularly LSU Tigers football and baseball was unmatched. He would eagerly watch every game, cheering on his beloved teams with unwavering enthusiasm with his dedication to supporting LSU sports teams.

He is survived one son, Glenn Pitre, Jr. (Shelly) of Eunice, LA; one daughter, Melissa Montgomery of Melville, LA; one sister, Joan Michael (Gary) of Dallas, Texas; nine grandchildren: Lauren Montgomery (Isaias Torres), Fredrick Montgomery II (Maygan), Coby Ducote (Ashley), David Ducote (Kristen), Julianne Dupre, Christopher Brown, Kari Ganson, Collin Ganson, and Leonarde Ganson; fourteen great-grandchildren: Abby Montgomery, Tre’ Montgomery, Sofia Torres, Karter Torres, Blayke, Emma, Kelsie, Karlee, Kinzlie, Connor, Emma, Anna-Grace, Blaise, and Kagan; and one great-grandchild soon to be born.  He also has four godchildren: Yvonne Jones, Samantha Pitre, Tommy Rouse, and Brandon Lee; a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
