Michael Fontenot, a beloved husband, cherished friend, and creative spirit, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 76. Born on October 26, 1949, in Opelousas, Louisiana, Michael lived a meaningful and inspiring life rooted in dedication, artistry, and love for those around him.
A Catholic Memorial Service will be held for Michael on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. in the Skip Montet Memorial Chapel at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home in Opelousas. The Very Reverend Monsignor Keith J. DeRouen will conduct the memorial service. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas, La.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home in Opelousas on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.
After completing his early education, Michael pursued his passion for design, earning an Associates Arts Degree in Interior Design. His creativity and keen eye brought beauty and warmth into many spaces, most notably through his unique stained-glass designs.
Michael was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, where he served with honor in the Security Agency. The discipline and commitment he demonstrated during his military service contributed deeply to his approach to life.
Throughout his years, Michael valued family and friendship above all. He is survived by his devoted spouse of 27 years, Charles Shindo, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, whose partnership provided years of shared joy and unwavering support. Michael’s compassionate nature extended to his beloved fur baby, Princess Simone Fontenot, who brought comfort and companionship. He is remembered fondly by his sisters-in-law, Kathryn Nuss, and her husband, Wendell, of Pacific Grove, California; Carolyn Wills of Long Beach, California; Evelyn, and husband, Thomas Okamoto, of Yorba Linda, California and Lori Shindo, of Titusville, Florida. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Eusebe Fontenot and Elise Deville Fontenot; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and May Shindo; and his brother-in-law, Robert Shindo.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Michael’s remarkable life, honoring the kindness, creativity, and generosity he shared with all.
Michael Fontenot will be remembered for the warmth and integrity he brought into the lives of others. His memory will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
