Raymond J. "Sonny" Burleigh, a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at his residence in Opelousas, Louisiana. Born in Opelousas, Raymond spent a lifetime nurturing both his craft and his family with unwavering dedication.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Sonny Burleigh will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas, Louisiana. Father Jude Thierry will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal and burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park.
Visitation for Sonny will be held at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home on Monday, March 30, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Rosary service will be recited at 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening by Deacon Ulysse Joubert and the Friday Rosary Group. Visitation will re-open on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
Throughout his life, Sonny was self-employed as a welder, a vocation that not only defined his career but also reflected his steadfast work ethic and pride in his abilities.
Sonny’s heart was deeply connected to his family. He especially treasured the moments spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was a source of great happiness and strength throughout his life.
A devout Catholic, Raymond was a longtime and faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Evelyn Wyatt Burleigh of Opelousas; his stepson, Sam Tresner, and wife, Rebecca of Broussard, his stepdaughter, Veronica Tresner of Sunset; his brother, Michael Burleigh, and wife, Donna, of Opelousas; and his sisters, Barbara Bihm of Opelousas and Sandra Castille of Lafayette. Sonny also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren—Jerrett Tresner, Amanda Brown and husband, Ben, Victoria Tresner, Brittany DeVillier, Kimberly Tresner, Jacob DeVillier, and Phillip Tresner—as well as ten great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his loving legacy.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Burleigh and Verna Wyble Burleigh; his sister, Patricia Burleigh Jenkins; and his first wife, Sandra Lafleur Burleigh.
Sonny’s life was marked by steadfast dedication to his family, faith, and craft. His memory will live on through those who loved him and the community he so faithfully served. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
