Renella Lavergne

May 14, 1924 — November 9, 2018

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 for Renella Breaux Lavergne at St. Landry Catholic Church. The Reverend Monsignor Russell Harrington will officiate the Mass. Rite of Committal will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park.

Mrs. Lavergne, age 94 and a resident of Opelousas, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Eastridge Nursing Home in Abbeville.

Mrs. Lavergne was a very devout Catholic, who devoted her life to our Lord and her family. She was an avid member of St. Landry Catholic Church Daughters of America for 65 years. She was a volunteer at Prompt Succor Nursing Facility since its opening in the mid 1960's and she was also a member of the 3rd Order of the Carmelites. Renella's faith was steadfast as she was known by many as an angel on earth. Rosaries were held at her home and were attended by many on a weekly basis. This true faith and devotion to God and Our Lady has helped many through life's trials and led to many miracles.

She never stopped helping others by constantly praying, volunteering and helping everyone, especially those in the nursing home who were in need of prayer. The many books of daily poetic prayers that she wrote were in her words "a beacon of candlelight in a dark room." She taught to many, her children, grandchildren, family, friends and numerous others about the miraculous blessings and teachings of our Lord.

Renella was and always will be a true apostle of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her son, Ray E. Lavergne (Patsy); daughters, Delores Lavergne Ponciano (Edgar) and Mary G. Schafer (Mike); grandchildren, DeAnn Ponciano, Devi Ponciano, Alejandro Ponciano (Michelle), Carolyn Oertel (Sven), Omar Ponciano (Daniela), Stephen Lavergne (Francine), Kim Sonnier (Ron), Troy Lavergne, Christine Hebert (Chad), Stephanie Schafer, Nikki May (John) and Stacy Babin (Barry); 30 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Louis Lavergne; parents, Ellis J. Breaux and Arista Touteheque Breaux; son, Glenn Gerard Lavergne; brother, Ulysses Breaux; and sisters, Mazie Guidry and Ethel Soileau.
