It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of R.L. Montgomery III on Wednesday August 25, 2021 at the age of 81. He was a lifelong resident of Opelousas. He graduated from Opelousas High School and severed in the Army National Guard. He started his career with the Louisiana State Police in 1963 until his retirement in 1999. During this time, he was the last Captain of Troop K in Opelousas. After the closing of Troop K, R.L. was promoted to Major Inspector of the Louisiana State Police for Region II.
R.L. was a past Master of The Humble Cottage Lodge # 19, he was a 32nd degree Master Free Mason. He was a 50-year Shriner. He was a past member of the Opelousas Airport Commission. He also served on the Board of Directors at Doctor’s Hospital for many years.
R.L. was an avid LSU football fan, he was a season ticket holder for many years and absolutely loved Tiger Stadium. He enjoyed golfing and tennis and was proud to have his pilot’s license.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Shirley Montgomery; Two sons: Chadwick F. Montgomery and Michelle, and Russell Montgomery IV, and wife, Patricia; one daughter: Patricia Fisher and husband Dave; and three grandchildren: Russell Montgomery V, Nicholas S. Fisher and Cici Bourque.
He was preceded in death by his infant son Robert Paul Montgomery, his parents: Russell Montgomery II and Doris W. Clark and brother Michael Montgomery.
Pallbearers will be Chadwick Montgomery, Rusty Montgomery, Dave Fisher, Russell Montgomery, and Nicholas Fisher.
Visiting for R.L.'s dear friends and family will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 27, 2021 at the LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas. There will be a rosary service at 1:45 p.m. by Deacon Dwayne Joubert who will also officiate a religious service at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Rite of Committal will follow at the Bellevue Memorial Park cemetery.
