Myrtle Meche

January 22, 1923 — October 6, 2021

Krotz Springs- A Mass of Christian Burial for Myrtle Leonie Meche will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Krotz Springs. Rite of committal and burial will be held in the St. Anthony Cemetery in Krotz Springs.  Fr. Michael DeBlanc will celebrate the Mass.

Oh, to live to be nearly 100 years old… Our Aunt Myrtle was born in a different time and lived to see so many changes over her lifetime. At 4 years old she experienced the Flood of 27’ moving with her mom and dad, first to a levee tent then to a tent in Opelousas. They returned to Krotz Springs, cleaned up their newly constructed home and settled in to become a wonderful family of nine. Myrtle graduated high school and went on to college, set on becoming a Home and Family Sciences teacher. WWII interrupted her senior year, thus she was recruited by Standard Oil of Baton Rouge to work in the Petroleum Industry as a Sr Lab Tech, filling in for men who had gone off to war. Her life was filled with many loves:  sewing, cooking, gardening, studying the Bible and traveling, but none of these kept her from loving her huge growing family and God. Myrtle never married nor had the blessing of children of her own, but her sisters and brother gave her 28 nephews and nieces to love. We made her ours and enjoyed taking her to lunch, which she loved, and to our homes to share holiday gatherings.

Myrtle traveled the world with family and friends. She loved Paris, especially Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Alter Society at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in KS, volunteered to help teach catechism, and went to Mexico on a missionary trip in her 80s. She was a Cursillo attendee and a Women’s Ultreya group member, who always wore her Sacred Heart Medal and attended daily mass. She was the oldest member of the Krotz Springs Quilting Guild. Myrtle’s love of reading and garnering knowledge brought her to the library frequently.

Myrtle is preceded in death by her parents Olivia (Bryant) and Raoul Meche, both natives of Leonville.  Her siblings and their spouses: Clovis and Gayle (Poe) Meche, Jeanette Meche Norris, Sylvia and Matthew Sennette, Norma ‘Jo’ and Bobby Evans, Patricia and Elmer LaHaye and Gayle ‘Snookie’ and Nolan Simmons.  She was also preceded in death by her niece Elizabeth LaHaye and her best friend and sister in God, Loretta C. Kaiser.

Myrtle is survived by her nephews and nieces: Cheryl Soileau, Lynn Kimble, Suzanne Hollis, Dusty Meche, Phil Perona MD, Thomas Norris, Mary Norris, Clay Norris, Patrick Norris, Teresa Meche, Sarah Harville, Rebecca Miller, Miriam Schrock, Brent Sennette, Gwen Smith, Cindy Ellis, Jimmy Evans, Nyssa Godwin, Sabrina Ardoin, Danica Evans, Mark LaHaye, Brian LaHaye, Tim LaHaye, Ann Marie LaHaye, Matthew LaHaye, Scott Simmons, Adrian Simmons and Nick Simmons. She is also survived by many great nephews and nieces and several great, great nephews and nieces.

Her great love of God and her unfailing Catholic faith has left each of us an example to follow in our own lives.     Romans 14:8  “For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.”

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 8, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. for the until 8:00 p.m. in the Lafond Ardoin Funeral Home of Krotz Springs.  On Saturday, visitation will continue from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.  A Rosary Service will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening in the funeral home by Joan Kaiser Bergeaux.
